A superb ancient ceramic depicting a Colima Lord in his canopy. A great dignitary, with medallions at his chest, epaulettes at his shoulders, and an elaborate headdress surveys the scene through enormous eyes from his covered litter. Canopy has 4 legs. A small sculpture which looks great from front and back and speaks volumes of Colima, W. Mexico culture. Late Preclassic- circa 300-100 BC, Tuxcacuesco-Ortices sub-style. For further information on this special genre see "Anecdotal Sculpture of Ancient West Mexico", Hasso von Winning, Los Angeles, 1972. Intact and in excellent condition with manganese deposits and root traces. From an old California collection. Rare. ex-Anthropos Fine Arts
