In celebration of the July 4th Holiday, we have brought together a selection of "America Through Time".
A very large and heavy American barn panel, with cut out decorative design mounted on brown barn panel. Wear on paint from long exposure. Pennsylvania Dutch country, Burke County, Pennsylvania. One of a pair. Very imposing, working as paintings and large scale sculpture. The barn was built in 1840. This and the twin panel (sold separately), circa 1860-1880.

A circular Plains Indian drum with rawhide head, wooden frame and old iron nails.

JAN HAAG - "UNICORN"
Double strand Persian wool on 12 mesh canvas. Continental stitch in all four directions. Approximately 29,736 stitches.

In 1974 the unicorn was just becoming a well-known icon in the States. Haag gave the icon a rather ironic twist: note the predominance of American red, white and blue colors. True to Haag's spirit, the unicorn is depicted with one paw raised, indicating that it will not step on any living thing.This work is sold as part of a collection.
A "Sip-ikine" Kachina Doll. The Sip-ikine is a Zuni Warrior Kachina that appeared in the Bean Dance at the First Mesa. Evidence of extensive handling and use. Great pigments. Circa 1920-30.

Spray paint on plexiglass. LA based artist and designer Califawnia is known for her work in the fashion world, working with Hurley, True Religion, Lucky and others. KENJI SHIOKAWA - "UNTITLED"
South Los Angeles based sculptor and mixed-media artist Kenzi Shiokawa was born in Japan, raised in Brazil, and received his art education in Los Angeles.Working with large pieces of salvaged wood, Shiokawa patiently turns these into inspirational touchstones. Shiokawa's work is currently being featured in an exhibit at the Hammer Museum.

An exceptionally large catlinite American Indian pipe from stone quarried at the famous mines in Minnesota. This pipe is unusual for both its great size, and its elaborate metal inlay. This pipe dates to the late19th century, and would no doubt have been an important piece in council and treaty sessions. Plains Indians.

Two colorful stones from Calico, CA, a site which Louis Leakey explored to much controversy. It is a matter of dispute whether these are geofacts or stone tools, but they are beautiful explosions of color. One stone has a residue of white adhesive on the back where a collector likely affixed it to a board. Stones are sold as a pair and mounted on two custom museum stands. A large and very early California Maidu basket with bird like design. At some point a preserving substance was applied to the surface. Some mustiness lingers, but the age, refinement, and resonance of this basket makes it exceptionally rare.

A prehistoric Southern California Indian bowl, found Santa Paula, 1933, found upside down with gold inside. Perfect symmetry. Stunning in its simplicity. As good in design as any Japanese or Chinese bowl of any period. The steatite for this bowl would have been quarried on Catalina Island. Some fissures on exterior bottom of bowl which do not penetrate to interior, and some minor chips along lower exterior surface and a tiny one on rim. Blackened patina. Overall excellent condition. Certainly the most elegant stone bowl we have seen; a tour de force of aesthetic minimalism. Circa 1000 AD or before.

BONNIE SALAND - UNTITLED
Traversing an extensive archive of imagery from the personal and collective unconscious, Bonnie Saland meanders through geographic, literary and spiritual references to create a richly layered iconographic language. Her work incorporates patterning, abstraction, and use of color, reconfiguring many sources, including textile and digital media and has been featured in many national publication. LA and Sea Ranch based Saland holds an MFA from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design program at the Fine Arts Work Center.

MICHAEL FARHAT - "LIKE A BEE"
Hyper-realist works on plexiglass by Michael FarhatMichael Farhat is a Los Los Angeles based artist and illustrator. Farhat's portraits have sold to superstars Blake Griffin, DeAndre Jordan, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, and others. The process for Farhat's mixed-media works is complex, the artist working in reverse from the back of the piece, using free hand stencils, collage materials, and spray paint on plexiglass in which Farhat is a pioneer. Farhat has been commissioned by Microsoft, as well as by the NBA to create artwork on a Google platform at the 2016 NBA All Star Game in Toronto.

A very large twined burden basket, Shasta/Achumawi/Pit River, Northeastern California. Conical form, starting from a conifer root base, tight diagonal weave, with an overall zig zag meander dark band through the center of the body and three separate areas near the rim representing "quail plumes" design motif. Parallel bankd in different weaving techniques at overcast rim wrapped in redbud. Damage from native wear/use at base of cone, and breaks in stitch within negative portion of rim, fragile. As these work baskets were mostly overlooked by early collectors, they are now rare. From the Wright Family Collection, for whom Wrightwood, California is named. Circa 1900.

A bullroarer made from a flat peel off of a cottonwood tree. The narrow, top end of this artifact would have once displayed a hole, attached to a cord. These were swung around in the air to produce a soft mellow tone, summoning the Spirits, and used in ceremonies, and in some cases as childrens' toys. These are some of the earliest musical instruments.This piece has been tested with improvised duct tape and string, and it still sings as it did 2,500 years ago.
