Heating Stone Shaft Straightener Southern California
A S. California Indian steatite heating stone with hole for handling from Catlina Island. The stone would have been quarried off shore, and brought onto the mainland for working. Unusual about this piece is that the bottom side shows a groove characteristic of arrow straighteners, used to straighten heated shafts. So this would have had a dual use, and been easily carried with its hole, useful also for suspension. Ex. Gerald Smith, Redlands, CA. Smith was founder of the San Bernadino County Museum. Ex.
