An old traditional Kuba beaded chief's chair with embroidered textile, cowrie shells, trade beads, and raffia cloth from the Congo. Use of bead patterning and colors induces the effect of "op art". The throne of a chief or important personage, that would have traveled with him as he went from one village to another. A prestige object. Considerable wear and some fraying to indigenous cloth at edges and fragile-but this sort of wear would have been of little import within the culture-only serving to remind of the important events where it had been used and treasured. Mid 20th century.
