Collection: TED TOKIO TANAKA

Ted Tokio Tanaka was born in Tokyo, but moved to the US with his family as a teenager. Studying architecture at Arizona State University, and in close contact at the time with both Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesen West, and Paolo Soleri's Arcosanti, Tanaka moved to Los Angeles at the beginning of his professional career. In his time in Los Angeles, Tanaka designed dozens of residential and commercial projects in Los Angeles, Japan, and Europe.

In 2000, Tananka was given charge of the design transformation of Los Angeles International Airport, a project which brought the iconic LAX sign and electronic pylons to international recognition. His firm has since been charged with the design components surrounding the many Metro stations which are transforming Los Angeles transportation. The drawings presented here were done at a time Tanaka was musing on the LAX project.
